Ian McKellen To Star In A New ‘Age-Blind’ Production of Hamlet

According to the culture secretary Oliver Dowden’s five-step roadmap for opening theatres, the first step was maintaining social distancing during practice sessions and the rehearsals will start keeping in mind the roadmap. Hamlet is going to be directed by Sean Mathias who has previous experience of working with Sir Ian McKellen. For now, the rehearsals have begun but it’s unknown when the new production will open.

Sir Ian shares his happiness of being able to work again and owes it all to Bill Kenwright for inspiring him and Sean Mathias for deciding to remake Hamlet. It is said that the rehearsals will begin with all precautions like social distancing, screening, hygiene, and the use of personal protective equipment. The producers are optimistic and believe that the rehearsals must go on even if they can screen it now. Kenwright does not want this opportunity to begin with the play slip away as he, Sean, and Ian have been waiting for this so long.

The producers understand the current situation and value the health of the country’s people. That is why they are not planning to announce the opening night until the pandemic ends. But they do believe in starting the preparations which can be done keeping in mind the scenario and taking adequate measures.

Mathias, the artistic director at Theatre Royal Windsor shares his disappointment about COVID-19 due to which they won’t be able to perform their play in front of the audiences. However, he says it is encouraging they can at least start with the preparations. Along with this he also announced that the cast will include Ben Allen, Emmanuella Cole, Alis Wyn Davies, Oli Higginson, Nick Howard-Brown, Jonathan Hyde, Asif Khan, Missy Malek, and Jenny Seagrove.

Hopefully, the pandemic ends soon and we all get to see the new interpretation of Hamlet starring Sir Ian McKellen.
